How to Get Paid Back With PayPal & SEPA QR Codes

"What was your IBAN again?" — "Wait, how much was mine?" — "I'll do it when I'm home." The distance between owing and paying is friction. A QR code removes all of it: your friend scans, the amount is pre-filled, they hit send. Here's how it works and how to set it up for ticket money.

Two codes, every friend covered

PayPal QR

Built from your PayPal.me link. Your friend scans with their camera or PayPal app, the payment page opens with the amount set, done — great for friends who live in PayPal.

SEPA QR (the underrated one)

Officially the EPC QR code: a European banking standard that encodes your IBAN, name, amount and a reference line. Nearly every European banking app scans it and pre-fills a normal bank transfer. It's free for both sides, needs no account anywhere, and the reference ("2 tickets — Rote Sterne, 09.07.") lands right in your bank statement.

Set it up once in TicketFae

  1. Settings → Pay-Me. Enter your IBAN for SEPA and/or your PayPal.me handle. Once — that's the whole setup.
  2. Per friend, choose what they can use. In a buddy's details, switch off methods they don't have, so only QR codes they can actually scan are ever offered.
  3. When money is owed, tap the button. In the Spending tab, every open balance has PayPal / SEPA buttons — the QR appears with that friend's exact amount and the event as reference. Standing outside the cinema: they scan your screen, and it's settled before the trailers.
  4. Mark paid. One tap on the circle — with Undo if you fumble — and the outstanding badge counts down.
TicketFae Pay-Me settings with SEPA and PayPal configuration
IBAN and PayPal.me configured once — QR codes generated per debt forever after.
Why per-debt QR beats a generic "pay me" link: the amount and the event reference travel inside the code. Nobody types €14.00, nobody rounds to €10, and your bank statement says what the money was for.

Where the amounts come from

This is the difference between TicketFae and a QR generator: the amounts aren't typed, they're inherited from the tickets. When you split the group's ticket PDF or bill before buying, each friend's expense record is created automatically — the QR code just wraps the number that's already true.

Frequently asked

Do SEPA QR codes work with every bank?
Most European banking apps support EPC QR codes. For the odd one that doesn't, share the payment request as text instead — IBAN, amount and reference included.
Are there fees?
SEPA transfers between friends are free. PayPal friends-and-family payments are typically free from balance/bank within the EU — PayPal's current terms apply.
Can a friend pay several events at once?
Yes — settle a buddy in full from their row, covering all their open events in one payment.
